 What is NT Music School Battle of the School Bands?

NT Music School Battle of the School Bands is a competition for NT middle and senior school bands and soloists/duos.

What can I win?

When will I be notified if I make the final?

Finalists will be contacted Monday April 24 via email after judges have scored all entries.

When is Territory Day 2023 Concert

Saturday 1 July 2023.

Eligibility

Who can enter?

NT Music School Battle of the School Bands is open to bands consisting of three or more middle and senior students (Years 7-12) enrolled in government and non-government schools in the Northern Territory and soloists or duos in middle to senior years (Years 7-12) enrolled in government and non-government schools in the Northern Territory.

My band is made up of members from different schools. Can we still enter?

Yes, as long as all members are current NT middle or senior school students.

Not all the members of my band go to school. Can we still enter?

No, all members must be current NT middle or senior school students.

Is there a maximum number of students that can play in a band?

No.

My band’s music style is jazz/folk/country/funk/heavy metal/etc, can we enter?

There are no restrictions on the style of music that is performed in the NT Music School Battle of the School Bands.

Our song has swearing in it, is that okay?

No, swearing is not acceptable. The NT Music School Battle of the School Bands is a school function and all students participating will be subject to the normal school policies. This includes inappropriate language.

Can we sing to a backing track?

Yes, as long as the backing track has been written by a student.

Can I play a cover song?

No, you must own the copyright to the songs that you perform.

Is there a restriction on song length?

As a guide songs should be no longer than 4 minutes in length.

Are there any other eligibility requirements or restrictions?

Please ensure that you read and understand the Terms and Conditions.

Video entries

Video Entries for NT Music School Battle of the School Bands 2023 is by video.

Your entry must be received by Friday April 6

Can I record the video in front of a live audience?

Yes, you can shoot your video in any setting that you like, providing the video allows for the judges to clearly see and hear your performance. School performance rules apply (see terms and conditions)

Do I have to use my phone to record my performance?

No, whatever camera you have access to will be acceptable, again providing that the video allows for the judges to clearly see and hear your performance.

Can I stop recording halfway through my performance to setup other gear or make other adjustments?

No, this is part of your act. If you need to change things around the judges need to see this.

Can I talk to the camera between songs?

Yes, this is a great way to demonstrate stagecraft technique.

Where do I send my Video Entry?

Upload your video and lyrics sheets to a cloud service such as GoogleDrive or OneDrive and share the files to nt.musicschool@education.nt.gov.au with the subject ‘NT Music School 2023 Battle of the School Bands – Act Name’

What if I’m having problems recording/uploading or other?

Please see if your music teacher can help you in the first instance, but if you are still having trouble reach out to the NT Music School via our email nt.musicschool@education.nt.gov.au or phone 89635550.
